Gerard van Lennep
Carel met Gerard van Lennep at the Nürburgring in 1962 and the two would become best mates. After Carel acquired a Porsche 904 in 1964 the plan was to share it in sportscar events, and during the 24 hours of Le Mans race. But it was a dog to drive and Gerard totalled it during practice at Zandvoort in the infamous Scheivlak corner. Carel laughed at the sombre message Gerard had to tell over the phone. "Carel wanted to save some money by not insuring the car. He thought it was quite funny that I thwarted that plan…". Gerard paid for his part of the damage costs. But they skipped Le Mans due to this accident.
Gerard is a cousin of the internationally renowned racing driver Gijs van Lennep and his brothers David and Hugo, both of whom pursued motor racing careers as well. Also known for his rallying exploits, Gerard was a successful racing driver on a national level, becoming the 1966 and '67 national 850cc touring car champion in a Steyr-Puch.
After his racing career Gerard van Lennep became a well-known journalist, columnist and agent.
