Flight Lieutenant Richard 'Dickie' Stoop was among the pilots that used the Westhampnett airfield's perimeter track as a race track during their off-hours, tearing round in their MGs. And so the RAF squadron leader was partly responsible for the aerodrome to be converted to Goodwood Motor Circuit.
Later, Stoop became a well-known private sportscar and F2 entrant who raced well into the sixties. He was Carel's partner for the 1960 Le Mans race. They qualified 24th in their RS60 but failed to make it to the finish.
