After having competed in the Swedish Kanonloppet, Carel drove 2000 miles across Europe to start practice at the Enna circuit around lake Pergusa in Sicily, to take part in the Mediterranean Grand Prix. During practice Carel did reasonably well (12th) until the stub-axe of his Porsche broke. He tried Count Volpi, another Porsche entrant, for spare parts but he was unable to help, which led to Carel failing to make the start.

As a spectator he saw the race being dominated by John Surtees in a lone Ferrari, while Trevor Taylor had an infamous crash, being thrown out of his Team Lotus car and landing unconsciously on the track surface. Miraculously, Taylor escaped without major injury.
