Fourteen Formula 1 cars started the Kanonloppet, but the race really was between Brabham and Team Lotus. Brabham was the quickest in practice and almost the entire first heat but the fuel consumption of his Climax engine let him down. Thus, victory in heat one went to the inevitable Jim Clark. Although Clark had to settle for third in the second heat behind Brabham and team mate Taylor, he won on aggregate.
Carel qualified eight and fought Masten Gregory's private Lotus for two heats but in the end had to settle for seventh behind the bespectacled American.
