Perhaps the non-championship Syracuse Grand Prix was the closest Carel would ever come to a single-seater victory. Helped by a shortened list of competitors, the reliability of his Porsche and a rain shower he was the only driver to stay on the same lap of the victorious Siffert. In practice Carel had already proven that his performance wasn’t a fluke by qualifying fourth.
