The non-championship Pau Grand Prix was the new seasons first Formula 1 race for Carel and the Ecurie Maarsbergen and he was present with two cars the 201 chassis driven by himself and the 202 on loan to its former owners of Scuderia Filipinetti for driver Heinz Schiller. Practice and race were dominated by Team Lotus and in particular their lead driver Jim Clark and his Type 25.
Carel qualified ninth and managed to climb up to fourth place, albeit two laps behind the Lotus pair and one lap behind Schiller in his own Porsche in third.
