Once again the United States Grand Prix turned out to be a battle between Clark and Hill. They lapped the entire field and Clark won in an impressive way. He thus kept the Championship alive between himself and Hill.
Carel had qualified 13th and failed to finish because he had one of his, by now, rare driver errors: he hit the guard rail on lap nine and in the process severely damaged his Porsche. Carel managed to return his car to the pits, but the left rear suspension was broken.
