Carel never competed in the Monaco Grand Prix, but 1962 was the only year he took a shot at qualifying. The timed sessions were used to determine which of the unseeded drivers could actually start, the seeded drivers being the drivers who were secured a spot on the grid despite their practice times. This meant that for example Tony Maggs and Joakim Bonnier could start in their works cars while Masten Gregory and Jo Siffert did not qualify despite being some three seconds faster than the aformentioned seeded drivers.
Alas Carel never even got close. Only Nino Vaccarella was slower around the Monte Carlo streets.
