No less that 33 cars were entered for the Modena Grand Prix, and that would have been a lot less if they knew beforehand what kind of qualifying system the organisers had worked out. Only 14 cars would be allowed on the grid and from these 14 at least three should be run by Italian drivers. This meant that although Carel was a respectable 17th in practice he was not allowed to race. It was little consolidation that even Innes Ireland in the works Lotus missed the cut.
In the race Stirling Moss kept the Porsches of Bonnier and Gurney at bay and won for Rob Walker’s team.
