The organisers of the Belgian Grand Prix only awarded starting money for a selected group of sixteen drivers and the best three others from practice. Carel had taken over the original factory entry for Hans Herrmann, who had withdrawn. Although he qualified a respectable 14th, he missed the cut but decided to start anyway, at his own expenses.
In the race as well as in practice Ferrari were dominant and finished a 1-2-3-4, with Phil Hill beating Von Trips. Carel finished 11th, two laps down.
