There was a big turn-up for the South African campaign in 1960/'61 with 21 drivers entering the Cape Grand Prix. Carel was fifth in practice and on the second row, next to local driver Johnstone in a Cooper-Alfa and behind Moss, Bonnier and Trips. After three laps Carel came into the pits with an engine running on three pistons. The problem could be solved easily but Carel dropped back to seventeenth. Carel worked his way up through the field to sixth, and sixth became fifth after Seidel got stranded without petrol. The race was won by Moss in Walker’s Porsche.
This is what the programme had to say about Carel, in Afrikaans of course... (Marius Matthee archives)
