Carel didn’t compete in the Coupe de Vitesse, a Formula 2 race at Rheims which was run at the same day as the French Grand Prix. The record books show a ‘did not qualify’, but it’s also possible that Carel decided not to start himself. The weather was terribly hot, so hot in fact that the drivers really suffered and this led to some dangerous situations. Because of this same heat Hans Herrmann decided not to start the Grand Prix as he considered himself unfit to do two races on the same day under such extreme circumstances.
During practice Carel caused concern with an extremely slow lap time. At first people feared something might have happened to the Dutchman on the far end of the 8.3-kilometre circuit but it turned out Carel had stopped to take a pretty girl in his Coupe and invited her for a ride.
