The 718 RSK Formula 2 car in which Carel competed in his home Grand Prix for the first time was probably on loan from the Porsche factory in an attempt from Stuttgart to boast Carel's career since he signed a contact to drive some endurance races for them in the 1958 season. Organisers were pleased with his entrance since it was the first time in six years that Dutch race fans could cheer on a compatriot at Zandvoort.

It was no surprise though that Carel was well off the pace. He was last in practice, more than two seconds slower than Scarlatti with whom he shared the last row. Practice as well as the race were dominated by the Vanwall team, with all three cars on the front row and eventually Stirling Moss won from start to finish. Carel finished the race but came in last, six laps behind the winner.
